It is unfortunate, but we often have to suffer to learn what it is we truly value. It is okay to make mistakes, but if we get to a point where mistakes are our dominant choices, it is time to reach out for help.
There are many different measures of success. To some it is financial security at any cost, taking on as many clients as possible, even if the quality of the work begins to slip. To others, helping clients improve their businesses is the mark of success.
In any case, what we choose to do, and what we choose to get help with has a dramatic impact on our business’ viability. Especially the way in which we outsource tasks to others. Throwing tasks at others because we are too overwhelmed only doubles the workload. In chasing and checking the work has been done right.
Jessica Lackey is a strategy and operations consultant, who has made it her life’s work to help purpose driven entrepreneurs build sustainable and well rooted businesses. Excited to be here. It's great to have you. And Jessica, I'd love to have you share your career journey leading up to this point. So I spent the first 15 years of my career climbing the traditional corporate ladder, working for a consulting firm, big— a Big 3 consulting firm, getting an MBA, working for a Fortune 500 company. And I hit the wall. I burned out super hard, uh, working all the time. My career was my life. And then about 7 years ago, I decided to make a pivot to get my life back. I became a life coach, then I became a business coach working with purpose-centered entrepreneurs because I didn't want them to go through the same burnout that I did. Wow. What, what was that transition like?
It was the biggest self-development journey I've ever been on. We had to change the default programming for how I spent my time, where I derived my own value from, and decouple from my worth and my identity and my value being about my work, and then slowly integrated more of my life back into my life during the past 7 years after making the— part of making the transition was I had a couple of interim jobs, some of which were actually promotions because when you get really focused on doing the right work, companies take notice.
